James RUMBLE from Dunton, Essex,
England and his wife Maria WALTERS from Swanscomb, Kent, England boarded the BOLTON at Gravesend, on the 19th
November 1839. They had with them their two children – Maria Elizabeth aged 5 years and Cornelius Daniel aged 2 years.
They arrived at Port Nicholson, New Zealand on the 20th April 1840, landing at Pito-One (now Petone).
The family settled at the River Hutt and over the next decade they had four more children.
Peter Alfred Crow William RUMBLE was born at the River Hutt on the 24th June 1841.
William RUMBLE was born in May 1844 and died in March 1847. He is buried in the St James Churchyard, Lower Hutt.
Henry William RUMBLE was born on the 15th May 1845.
James Edward Eizzard RUMBLE was born on the 9th January 1849.

James and Maria farmed near Taita with their family and from 1844 until 1872 James was on the Hutt Jury Lists and the Electoral Rolls.
Maria Elizabeth RUMBLE married Giles EDWARDS at St Paul’s Church, Wellington, NZ, in 1851 and remained in the Wellington area all her life. She died in 1918 and is buried along with her parents in the Catholic Cemetery at Korokoro, Petone, Lower Hutt.
James (snr) died on the 5th January 1880 and Maria on 2nd August 1884.
The remaining sons – Cornelius, Peter, Henry and James were all drawn to Central Otago in search of gold.
From there their families have spread throughout New Zealand.
